I consider the care and feeding of the Unimog to be like most old vehicles: you must tinker with them much more than current vehicles, you find and catalog parts resources and make new friends with similar vehicles.
Good luck to you and let us know if you make the purchase!

Hey there! Welcome from 10* north latitude!
I spend summers just 20 minutes south of you on the I 495 in Marion. My wife has family there and I love swimming and boating on Buzzards Bay during August!
You mentioned you get to play with these trucks as part of your job, but do you have the urge...
G'awd, that climate you live in! What do your hands feel like working outside in the white stuff???
Moxy is your watchword. I have subscribed because I appreciate and acknowledge your professed inexperience and look forward to seeing you succeed anyway! I expect you will succeed precisely...
I noticed that J.P.'s upload of the TM 9-2320-272-10 has a possible error(s) in the tabulated data.
His version has unusual table headings (Feet/Meter) and measurement data on page 64/836 where the approach and departure angles are listed. In the older (2004) version, the angles are expressed...
tuff-truck-fella,
I have not worked with or sold the 1017, but these folks in Germany sell MB parts for Unimogs. Based on the fact they speak fluent MB, I expect they have access to catalogs for the MB trucks as well!
They are highly competent at shipping international and I especially...
Are you seeking transport from Ohio to the NY/PA border, or the other way around? And what is the time line?
I thought the TSA frowned on people carrying someone else's carry-on luggage??

I completely agree with the above post. For getting hard work done, go with the deuce. For a nimble off road truck, go with the 404. Either truck will give you plenty of wrenching time and opportunities to spend your hard earned money.
And there are conversion threads out there regarding...
No sir. While the trailers share many parts, the ROWPU trailer is distinct. The most notable difference is that the M1061 has a completely flat deck, while the ROWPU trailer has raised wheel openings. Here is the first image of the deck from the parts manual:
I believe the ROWPU trailer is an...
Hi Justin! Welcome to the site! I have but two words for you and your quest to learn about mil surplus.....
Government
Liquidation
You can thank me later!
Rick
I'm interested to see images of the physical differences, and request some pics so we can all learn a little. Yes, I could do a search. I'll leave it up to you to decide if I am suggesting adding value to this thread or just being too lazy to do a search.

Thanks for the Coot reference. I took a quick look and found them to be exactly as you say: a smaller version of the concept.
I have found no references on the internet pertaining to failures of either a Willock swivel frame nor a Coot. There was one bloke poking around a few years back on an...
Boy, I dunno. The deuce spindle tube is about the same diameter as the original swivel. Would that not make them about equal for shear, with the material selection making the difference?

Holy thread ressurection, Batman!
I have been musing over this frame modification lately. Not for the hacking of a piece of OD, but for a vintage civvy Ford 1/2 ton 4x4 that has seen better days. This is only an idea...., I may be better off selling the truck complete and running, vs hacking it...
My 2 cents on the subject is that we hobbyists are not the correct people to ask. As a group we are generally self financed, sometimes at the expense of our retirement funding. So as a rule we purchase parts where they can be found at low prices.
Much better to coordinate small production with...
As a diagnostic you may want to try some external fuel enrichment at the moment of hesitation, to see if your assumption is accurate. I used to use a propane bottle with a hose attached to meter a little additional fuel into the air horn of the carburetor. I think this method is much safer than...
I am no deuce historian..... but the winch and shortened bed appear to be 5 ton material.
Good looking truck. Best wishes with your purchase and plans.
