why drill a hole in the lid? it already has a 1/8 pipe hole. but for fording you do not want to vent anything, you want to pressurize it which is what the fording kit does. this is what is done to vehicles that are expected to be in water. and even then the manual wants you to take everything...
you can make a whole new column too if you want to, but the goat column already has the lower bearing and all the horn parts. and may only be something like $10. and is NEW. you want to make all that stuff? of course the 710 does not line up with existing holes.

all gasket sets are the same. difference would be the gasket from turbo to exhaust pipe.
no retorque with new style gaskets.
use a die to chase all threads on studs, head and manifold for easier assymbly.
tom
and you need a new upper column to attach to. gamma goat is as close as you will find and they are new and cheap. tnj murray has had them. saginaw 710 bolts on the outside of frame.

really excessive black smoke is lack of air, or too much fuel. have you taken the air filter off and checked for blockage? how long did truck sit before new HH was installed? maybe someone built a nest.
tom
if it runs, the HH is good. are you sure you have the injector lines on correctly? i cannot imagine how you would get the HH off or on again unless the drive gear is in exactly the right spot with out bending the drive gear cover plate. with the HH out, you can look into the top of pump and line...
in the long run any oil you use from 30wt motor oil to 90 wt gear oil will be fine. i found that i had to use 40 wt motor oil in my transfer case to solve a problem. the 90wt oil would foam so much that it would blow out of the vent at speeds near 70. (in my last truck, cat powered with .66 OD)...
right. the red tooth has nothing to do with timing, it is just there for removal of the HH. if all 3 pointers line up it is wrong. really kind of stupid design if you think about it, but in another way it is nessacary so the HH cam will be on low spot to install HH easier. i think you will find...
ok, i have 3 original military rockwell air lockers in my truck and am seriously thinking of bobbing it. so i will have an extra axle that is way to valuable to just scrap. question is what is it worth? would some one else bobbing their truck want to buy it? just wondering.

seth_o, no i did not do any write up as i recall. basically i removed the pedal assy and master cyl and everything related to it. that freed up a lot of room underneath. i mounted the brake pedal assy from a 900 series on the firewall and the entire clutch hyd system from a UD box truck...

just be aware that the fuel is all that lubes the HH piston. yes the multifuel will burn straight gas, but only in an emergency and not for that long until the HH is toast. plenty of added oil to the fuel for lubing is a must.
