I wanted to toss this into the ring since we're on the subject of licenses. There are a lot of MV owners out there with radios in their vehicles but I wonder how many are FCC licensed. There's no license to operate them in receive mode (unlike the Brits) but if you want to transmit you should...
I've run Interstate batteries in my HMMWV for the last 18 years but their 6TLs have a piss poor waranty. Because this is a battery made for the military it only has a 1 year warranty. I found that out the hard way after losing 1 at 14 months. No prorating, no exchange, just cough up enough...
Yeah but if you want to listen to anything while your driving your going to need about a 1000 watt amp. These things were never made for anything but mobility. ****, you can't even hold a conversation with your passenger at a normal level!
I've used an addative called D2 for years. When I was first introduced to it I put the recommended dose into the tank and there was a noticable decrease in the sound of the fuel system operation.
I've had AAA come on base before to help with a dead battery so I don't see why they wouldn't do a tow from one. Yes, the OP is trying to arrange this from England but his request is from Barstow to Lancaster, about 96 miles.
Use CSAAA
Save yourself a whole stack of money and head on over to AAA and sign up for their 100 Plus membership package. They'll move your vehicle up to 100 miles under that service and they're used to non runners. Beyond getting it home the first time you'll have a full year to break down...
These amps were a part of the GRT-21 UHF radios used in airport towers all around the country. Unfortunately they were all sold over 10 years ago by the DRMOs. They're great amps and there are probably some still kicking around out there. Here's a link to a page with more information...
I would strongly suggest that you look at the vent system in your truck. When the cooling loop in the transfer case lets go it fills everything with ATF. It's referred to as the "vampire" because of the ATFs color. There are several great posts about the problem here and around the internet...
My truck started life as an M1026, morphed into an M1038 and now is configured as an M996A1 ambulance. The HMMWV in it's basic configuration ran tire pressures of 25 psi. After the military geniuses began to use them as armored vehicles and hung a ton of metal on them they raised the pressure...
Last April I changed out the batteries in my HMMWV and afterwards the truck got very hard to get going after sitting for a few days. After the first start it was fine again. I went thru all the electricals and checked the glow plugs and am now at a point where I suspect that I'm having this...
Check with McMaster-Carr: http://www.mcmaster.com/#push-to-close-door-latches/=zialai
This is a great site to know about for hardware of all kinds. They are great people, accept small orders, and have locations all across the country.
The latches are made by Southco here...
The HMMWV has the serial number stamped on the plate attached to the B pillar but there is also a manufacturing number stamped on your A (windshield) pillar. If you have friends in law enforcement they can run this number and give you information about when the truck was made.

I've got to agree with Steve about the Pulsetech systems. I called them too and the "technical assistance" person I talked to knew even less about it than I did. While they look like exactly what we could use in our HMMWVs I'd avoid using them.
The Vanner Equalizers are probably the best...
I run Hella H4 lamps on my truck. They're considerably brighter than the stock incandescent bulbs. You do need to make up a short pigtail to go from the Packard connectors to a standard 3 pin lamp connector but that's only a 10 minute job. I have run the cheepie Autopals from India and they...
Everybody suspects the regulators, replaces them and then wonders why the new one fails. Whenever you open up the alternator always check the brushes and the brush holder. I've had the brush holders melt and when that happens the brushes made poor (or no) contact with the rotor field contacts...
Search on eBay for 24v AM/FM radio. There are several to chose from that are designed to be used on tractors and boats that are fairly inexpensive. This eliminates the need to tap off of one battery or run a power dropping regulator.

lamp power
Powering the backup lights isn't a problem at all. All I did on my M996 was to install another neutral start switch in the shifter housing that was actuated by the shift mechanism. I took power from the shifter legend lights. They are either bright or dim depending on the position...
Make sure he sends you the handle for the side you need. The internal spring is different. It would have been 1000% better if AMG had just made 1 handle with 2 angled section that would have been universal.
