Very good point about one wheel on the ground. Of course, with 2 rear axles and 20,000lbs on top, you're not usually in a position to have a rear wheel from each rear axle off the ground. It can happen for sure, but no many do much rock crawling with their 5-ton... it would be cool to watch, though.

While neither used true "lockers", the Mighty Mites and Mules were more or less in the "locked" category. I think Mighty Mites used a limited slip type (once again, the Marines knew it worked for them), while the Mule axles just didn't have a differential unit, so those axles were solidly locked...

Does the truck run? If you don't know, does your friend have the means to drag the truck onto his trailer (Landoll or equivalent)? As Bruce pointed out, there is NO assistance. There's no forklift or tractor to push the truck with, etc... You might get lucky at certain sites and find a helpful...

I was actually referring to the tractor, since that's what most of the parts seemed to be related to. The trailers are not that uncommon, but the tractors are a different story.

Hard to start could also be glow plugs you mentioned, so you might want to get those replaced before trying to troubleshoot this problem. I hold the pedal 1/2 way whenever I start my trucks. That's the way these are supposed to be started. It just gives them a little extra fuel to fire over on...
