I think NDT and a few others gave me the same advice about 5 years ago. I'm driving in in high or low whenever I want now.

On your shift knob is it L-1-2-3 or 1-2-3-4?
My pack up plan for transmission failure is Chevy/AT. I will never haul a load. Maybe climb a logging road though.
When you put that in the GMC6x6 watch the top dog bone from frame to top of the axle. You may have the urge to cut it out for clearance. Notice the shackles on the front and rear of the leaf springs and you will know why it is there.

I see the bumper is cut. Did it have a snow plow or a fire pump on it at one time? Is there a hole in the radiator?
The winch was driven from the PTO on the side of the driver's side of the transfer case. A 2 piece shaft powered the winch. You should see a hole in the cross member on the driver...
