    You can pull the front valve cover and make sure both valves on #1 are closed when you have the harmonic balancer mark lined up. Then your hh mark should be one tooth behind the pointer ( in other words, it should be one tooth behind the mark towards the firewall), if it isnt, then your pump was...

    Soaking it in a hot parkerizing bath would do it. You could try an ultrasonic cleaning vat, that may separate the aluminum from the iron.

    That is normal. Line up your mark, pull the head, then roll the motor over one time and reinstall the head. See what that does.

    That's why I was saying I would have used the new LDT rings. More tension is better, especially since you have less rings anyway with the new pistons. I don't feel like those pistons are right for our engines. I'm thinking they are for another application, but since they fit, the dealers are...

    Yeah, sounds like it may be out of time. You may have put the head in off time, possibly 180 out. Or it may have been that way to start with.

    Good to know. The 5.9 can be turned up quite a bit more when equipped with an intercooler.
